Bone Grafting
What is a Bone Graft?
The best way to think about a bone graft is to consider how a new building is constructed. First, the builder makes a firm foundation, then, once this is stable and tested, the construction of the building can take place.
The purpose of bone grafting is simple: to re-establish jaw stability and ensure oral health in order to support a dental implant, each procedure is unique to each individual patient.
There are many different reasons a bone graft may be necessary. The main reason being that there is either not enough bone volume or density to support a dental implant. Missing teeth is a common cause of bone loss in the jaw, since the presence of your teeth is a big part of what keeps your jaw bone healthy and strong, when the teeth are lost, the bone ‘shrinks’ or resorbs’.
What Materials are Used for Bone Grafts?
There are two main types of material used for bone grafts: bone-like material or the patient’s own natural bone.
We use synthetic bone graft substitutes such as Ethoss and Powerbone which are totally replaced by natural bone in the long term. For larger grafts we may use bone from other parts of the mouth in order to provide a stable platform for implants long term.
What Is the Bone Graft Cost for Dental Implant Procedures?
Bone grafts for dental implants range between £300 and £1,500 depending on the type of bone graft required. This is mainly dependent on the size of the defect that we would have to graft. This will become more apparent once we examine you and confirm the findings with x-rays and ct scans. Once these have been done we can come up with a treatment plan to see which treatment would best suit your needs.
